Getting started and pricing
What does Fango do?
Fango is a money-saving app that works through food. You scan a shop receipt and the items go into tracking with their own shelf-life estimates. When something is about to expire you get a reminder in time — and the food you do eat shows up in your statistics as money, because that is money you didn't throw away.
A shopping list comes with it, one that can suggest what is genuinely running low, along with tracking for the freezer and the pantry.
What does Fango cost?
The first month is free with every feature unlocked. After that the subscription is $2.99/£2.99 a month or $22.99/£22.99 a year, and it renews automatically until you cancel.
One rescued bag of groceries a month pays the subscription back.
How do I cancel the free month?
You cancel in the same store you started in: on iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions, on Android Google Play → profile picture → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions. If you cancel before the month is up you are not charged, and the trial still runs to the end.
Fango never handles payments itself — they go through the App Store and Google Play, and refunds are handled there too.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Fango works without a user account: no email, no password, no sign-in. You download the app and start scanning.
Which devices does Fango work on?
Fango is available for iPhone on the App Store and for Android phones on Google Play. There is no separate browser, desktop or Apple Watch version.
Is Fango available in other languages?
Fango is available in eight languages: English, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, German and Spanish. Every text is written natively in each language, not machine-translated. The app follows your phone's language setting.
Can I share the fridge and shopping list with my family?
Yes. One subscription covers up to four people in the same household, and the others don't need their own. Everyone sees the same fridge, freezer and pantry, and a change one person makes reaches the others in seconds.
Only the shopping lists you choose are shared — the rest stay on your own phone. You join with an 8-character invitation code, so family sharing doesn't need an account either.
Are there ads in Fango?
No. Fango shows no ads and doesn't sell user data. The income comes from subscriptions, which is the whole reason the app can be built this way.
Scanning receipts
Does Fango work with my supermarket?
Fango reads receipts from 34 countries and isn't tied to particular chains — no deal with the shop is needed and there is no loyalty card to link. That is exactly why it also works in a small corner shop and on holiday abroad.
If a line isn't recognised, you can fix it in the review screen before the items go into tracking.
What if I don't have a paper receipt?
You can share an e-receipt to Fango straight from another app: an email attachment, your banking app's receipt archive, a delivery order confirmation or Files. Fango appears in your phone's share sheet whenever there is an image, a PDF or a file at hand — so a digital receipt never needs printing or photographing.
And you can always add a single item by hand in a few seconds.
How do I scan a long receipt?
One scan can take 1–4 photos, so a long receipt can be photographed in sections. The items are collected into a single list, and the same line isn't counted twice.
What if an item is recognised wrongly?
Nothing goes into tracking before you see the review screen. There you can edit every line: name, quantity, price, shelf life and where it is stored. Deposits, bags and discount lines are skipped already.
Your corrections are remembered. Next time Fango suggests your value for that item rather than its own — and you can mark a line so that it is never tracked again.
Does Fango read barcodes?
No, and that is a deliberate choice. A receipt gives the whole shop in one go — the items, the quantities, the prices and the date — while a barcode has to be scanned one product at a time and doesn't tell you what you paid. Receipt or barcode?
What happens to the photo of my receipt?
At the moment you scan, the content of the image is sent to an AI service (Anthropic Claude) to identify the items. The content is not stored on a server, it carries no name, user account or anything else that could be linked to you, and it is not used to train AI models.
The items that come back are saved on your phone. In full: privacy policy.
Reminders and shelf life
How does Fango know how long something lasts?
AI estimates a shelf life for every item and suggests where it belongs — fridge, freezer or pantry. The estimate is a suggestion: you can change it, and Fango remembers your choice for future receipts.
If the packaging has a date on it, use that. The estimate is meant for the items that have no date, or where the date doesn't tell the whole story — an opened pack doesn't keep like an unopened one.
When does the reminder arrive?
You choose: on the day itself, or 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 or 14 days before. You can set it for everything at once or for a single item, and you can pick the time of day too.
Freezer and pantry items also get automatic early reminders 30, 14 and 7 days ahead — otherwise a date six months away would slip your mind.
What can I do with the reminders?
From the notification you can mark an item eaten or wasted, postpone the date by two days, or move the item to the freezer — without opening the app.
Does Fango track the freezer and pantry too?
Yes. The same list covers the fridge, the freezer and the pantry, and you can filter the view by where things are stored. Freezer and pantry items get shelf lives measured in months rather than days.
Is there a home screen widget?
Yes. The widget shows what is about to expire without you opening the app, and it counts the days itself.
Does the app work offline?
Browsing the list, marking items, the shopping list and the reminders all work without a connection. Only receipt scanning needs one, because the photo is read by AI.
Shopping list
What does Fango's shopping list do?
It is an ordinary shopping list that sorts itself into 13 aisles in the order you walk the shop, so you don't double back. There is a separate shop mode with large rows and a progress bar, a budget per list, and as many lists as you want.
A row can carry a quantity, a price estimate and a free note (“lactose-free”).
Does Fango suggest what to buy?
Yes, in three ways: the things you buy regularly, taken from your receipt history; the things running low in your fridge; and, after a new receipt, a prompt to remove the items you just bought.
This is the part a plain shopping list app cannot do: suggesting “milk is running out” needs to know what is in the fridge and how long it keeps. The suggestions are calculated on your phone, not by AI.
Can I set a budget for a list?
You can. You give the list a target, and the estimate builds from the price estimates on the rows. In the shop the total drops as you tick items off, so you can see whether you are going over before you reach the till.
Do items I buy move into tracking automatically?
They don't. Ticking an item off marks it bought, but it doesn't put it into shelf-life tracking — that needs a date, and a shopping list has none. Items get into tracking by scanning the receipt or by adding them yourself.
Savings and statistics
What is “up to $60 a month” based on?
Household food waste has been measured in several countries: the UK's WRAP estimates around £1,000 a year for a family of four, the US Environmental Protection Agency around $2,900 and the Department of Agriculture around $1,500 a year.
$60 a month is an estimate of what stopping that waste can bring back — not a promise. Your own number is in the app's statistics. How much does food waste cost?
What does Fango count as savings?
Only food that was about to expire. When you mark an item eaten and it had little time left, that counts as a rescue. So does freezing it, or pushing its date back, at a point where it was already at risk.
Fango doesn't claim everything you eat as a saving. The window follows your own reminder settings, because the credit belongs to the warning the app managed to give. A single entry can be corrected afterwards if it went in wrong.
Do I see my own savings in money?
You do. The statistics screen has a monthly target and a ring that fills with the money you rescued, plus a rescue percentage, a monthly trend and your history. On Monday mornings a short weekly recap arrives, if the week had anything worth reporting.
Money tracking can be switched off entirely if you would rather follow item counts only.
Privacy and your data
Where is my data stored?
Items, dates, prices, statistics and settings are stored on your phone, and the app needs no user account. Your data stays on your device unless you choose to share it with your household.
The other exception is receipt scanning: the content of the image passes through an AI service to be identified (see above). The full description: privacy policy.
Does Fango collect usage data?
Usage analytics are off by default and can be turned on in the settings if you want to. They collect no items, no prices and no personal data.
How do I delete my data?
The statistics can be reset in the settings, and deleting the app removes what is stored on the device. Because there is no user account, there is no separate profile left behind to delete.
Where do I get help?
Write to support@fango.fi. The app also has a problem report form that sends the version details along, which usually gets to the bottom of things faster.
