What Listonic does well

Credit first. Listonic's core job is the shared list, and it's built for that from the ground up. Its App Store listing describes sharing lists in real time across devices, ticking items off live as the list changes, notifications when someone else updates it, sorting by aisle, alphabetically or custom, voice input, a large product catalogue, offline use with sync on reconnect, and meal and recipe ideas from an AI assistant.

Two details make it stickier than most rivals. Listonic's own site says you can "use Listonic right away without signing up", though it recommends a free account for syncing and backup; and the list isn't trapped on a phone — you can reach it "anytime on phone, tablet, or desktop via Listonic app or Listonic web", with a total cost calculator as you build it. If you need one list a household shares and edits at the same time, no app here — Fango included — beats it at that job.

Why people look for an alternative

The complaints that send people searching are consistent, and they follow from the business model rather than from sloppiness:

  • Ads, and paying to remove them. Listonic's help centre describes Premium as the ad-free version — "We remove all ads to let you enjoy shopping without any distractions" — plus currency and appearance customisation, and notes that "all our features remain free for all our users". So the paid tier's main product is the absence of advertising. On the UK App Store the listed in-app purchases run from £0.99 to £19.99, monthly to lifetime. Fair enough — but it does mean the free experience is the ad-supported one.
  • Ad-supported means data collection. Apple's privacy summary on the same listing shows data used to track you across other companies' apps and websites — location, user content, identifiers, usage data — with third-party advertising among the stated purposes. Normal for a free app, not a scandal; simply the opposite end of the spectrum from an app that keeps everything on the device, which is why the privacy-first end of this category exists.
  • The list ends at the checkout. The structural one. A list app knows what you wrote down, not what you brought home, what date was on the packet, or what you binned a fortnight later — so "buy again" suggestions come from list history, not shopping history. WRAP puts UK household food waste at roughly £1,000 a year per household, and almost none of it happens in the shop.

The paid tier, AnyList Complete, costs "$9.99 / year for an individual" or "$14.99 / year for a household" and unlocks recipe import, the meal planner, item photos, list folders, location reminders and price tracking — so budgeting by adding prices sits behind that paywall. Its App Store listing shows 4.9 stars from 80K ratings and lists barcode scanning, and the download page covers iOS and Android. What it can't do is look inside your fridge: like Listonic, it ends at the checkout.

OurGroceries is the plainest answer to "I just want the ads gone without losing the shared list". Its site advertises sharing lists with the whole household, use on iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, web and Echo, automatic grouping into store aisles, recipes that add ingredients to a list, and photos, notes, quantities and barcodes on items. Pricing is refreshingly clear: the user guide puts upgrading at "about US$1 per month… US$6 per year… and US$20 for a lifetime (one-time) upgrade", with a 7-day free trial, notes that it "will also get rid of the ads for everyone you are sharing your lists with", and — unusually — that "upgrading is not required in order to use OurGroceries, including all features and list sharing". The free tier is genuinely full-featured with ads; the upgrade buys silence for the household.
